More Than You See 1: 4.01 Mental Health Advocacy and Finding Your Voice with Jessica Erin Martin

 September 6, 2023

By  Deborah Lee Smith

Honored to have Jessica Erin Martin on the podcast as the first guest of Season 4! We discuss so many aspects of being a creative and mental health advocacy from finding your voice, coping with feelings of suicide and depression, creating your own work to help touch the lives of others, and what to do when the biggest achievement of your career coincides with the WGA/ SAG-AFTRA strike which means she can't promote her own work!

Jessica is an actor, writer, director, and producer hailing from Seattle. Jess started her career in regional theater and has performed on stages across the country. In Los Angeles, she has worked in commercials, films, and television (NCIS: LA, Ratched, General Hospital, S.W.A.T., Z Nation, Criminal Minds, The Last Ship, Grimm). She was most recently in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Jess is also the voice of Samus Aran in Nintendo’s Metroid: Other M.

To learn more about Jess, please look her up on IMDb or follow her on Instagram! Also, mentioned in the episode is the short film that Jess and I made a few years ago. Watch Imogen's Imaginary Friends here!

If this episode resonates with you, please share with your friends, subscribe, write a review etc! It really does help spread the word of mouth!

My platform, More Than You See is dedicated to exploring nontraditional mental health resources to help you build your own emotional wellness toolkit. I absolutely discuss therapy, the importance of medication, and highlight organizations around the world devoted to destigmatizing mental health, but I also focus on books, personal practices, podcasts, TED Talks etc, because here’s the thing… I’m not a licensed practitioner or therapist. I’m just a woman exploring my own journey with mental health and sharing my experiences and the experiences of the community with you, the listener. Join me for a weekly conversation every Wednesday that will be sure to bring a smile to your face and help you feel a little less alone. Because we’re all More Than You See.

Hi there! I'm an actor, producer, and writer who is devoted to storytelling and mental health awareness. After struggling through my own mental health, I found that non-traditional resources, like the ones we explore on More Than You See, helped me immensely get through my dark times. Thus, this website and podcast were born! I look forward to helping you gain agency over your mental health journey as you build your own toolkit of resources, tips, and ideas. Because you never know what might help pull you out of the darkness, and we are all More Than You See.
